Fluid for Microscopic Exam:

Why Fluid for Microscopic Examination Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Microscopic examinations can be used as a screening test (systemic infections like Malaria), for certain Cyto-pathological investigations for conformational studies (Histo-cytological studies on the FNAC specimens for the identification of cancers eg. cervical cancers from pap-smears specimens) and also for microscopic urinary sediment analysis for casts and crystals. The sample specimen is usually Intra-Vascular Fluid i.e Blood (serum/plasma) and/or body fluids. Body/Bio-Fluid Tests: Body Fluids include Peritoneal/Ascitic fluid (Ascites) – in peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of inner abdominal wall etc), Pericardial fluid, infected pleural fluid causing pleural effusion, Bronchial Wash, Drain or aspiration Fluids - Paracentesis, Thoracocentesis, aspiration of bone marrow, aspiration of amniotic fluid, JP Drain and /or blood, urine, saliva, sweat, bile fluid, seminal fluid, vaginal fluid, synovial fluid, nasal fluid, CSF, lymph, endolymph etc can provide a vital clue in the biochemical investigation of pathologies in certain disorders or disease conditions in certain differential diagnosis to arrive at a conclusive definitive diagnosis and also for prognosis.Significance of Microscopic Examination on Body Fluids test: It is a helpful tool since it identifies the type of cells and count – Number, shape and size (eg in abnormalities in the blood such as Blood Count – RBC, WBC, Platelets), examination on other suspected body fluids and tissue biopsies for infectious pathological micro-organisms and or parasites (confirmation by Histopathological studies like cysticercosis etc) and urinary sediments i.e like crystals, mucin, salts, epithelial cells, pus cells etc (Urinalysis - in urine sample specimen) in renal diseases. It also helps in detecting and evaluating renal and urinary tract infections. Additional tests include histopathological studies using SEM, TEM etc. Other tests include ELISA tests for the detection of microbial antigens or antibodies etc.
