CH-50 (Complement Total)

Immune System produces antibodies that fight against harmful foreign particles that enter the body. Complement System is a part of the Immune System that produces complement proteins that assist immunity efficiently. CH50 test is used to assess the function of the complement system and also to examine its associated proteins deficiencies.

Why CH-50 Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Complement proteins are a part of innate immunity that regulates enzymes of the complement, coagulation, fibrinolytic and kinin-forming systems. Their deficiency and/or disorders are found to be associated with autoimmune diseases such as lympho-proliferative disease, lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. The clinical manifestations include recurrent infections (due to conditions like acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) that lead to immuno -compromised states. The total complement activity is (also known as CH-50 as well CH – 100) a screening assay for the activation of the classical complement pathway. Hence its reduction or absence or inactivity becomes a crucial component in its cascade pathway. Elevated levels of CH-50 are an indication, suggesting the presence of immune activation eg. active inflammation indicative of certain conditions such as leukemia or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, ulcerative colitis, etc. While low or undetectable CH-50 indicates either complete deficiency of any complement component of the immune system eg. lupus erythematosis. Conditions that are associated with low complement activity include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chirrosis, kidney diseases, hereditary angioedema, malnutrition, recurrent infections (especially bacteria), etc. CH-50 test also known as CH-50 lab is a functional test that helps measure the function of (complement proteins) the complete classical complement pathway, mediated by components C1 to C9 (when CH-50 test shows abnormal functional test results, then each of the nine different complement levels can be measured individually/ together as a confirmatory test). Hence this CH-50 test result screens for hereditary or acquired deficiencies related to the complement proteins that facilitate the immune system. Clinical manifestations of altered complement proteins leading to disorders of the immune system include malar rash (lupus), fatigue, mouth sores, hair loss, sensitivity to sunlight, swollen lymph nodes, chest pain while deep breathing, joint pains, recurrent fevers, etc.
