Anti-Smith Antibodies are created in the response to Lupus Erythematosus (LE) and Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). This test measures the Anti-smith antibodies in the blood to diagnose Lupus and diseases of the connective tissue and its related abnormalities.

Why Anti-Smith Antibody test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

Anti-Smith Antibody test is a highly specific antibody is considered as a marker antibody for systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE), however, these antibodies are found only in 20% of patients with SLE and hence this test is performed along with an anti-nuclear antibody test. This test is performed to diagnose some cases of SLE and mixed-connective tissue disease (MCTD). Early symptoms indicative of lupus is a photo-sensitive rash (Malar Rash – A butterfly rash that develops in response to exposure to the sun- particularly in the face are arms) can develop large blisters called bulbous lupus rash, unexplained fever, and pain, swelling and stiffness of multiple joints. Other symptoms include raised red patches on the skin, ulcers in mouth and nose, inflammation in the lining of heart and lungs (pericarditis in heart, pleurisy in lungs – pain in the chest while deep breathing resulting in shortness of breath and/or may lead to pulmonary embolism), seizures, proteinuria, Raynaud’s phenomenon – purple or pale fingers or toes when exposed to cold or stress, etc. A few causes of SLE include drug-induced lupus-like medications such as steroids, hydroxychloroquine, cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, methotrexate, isoniazid, hydralazine, procainamide, minocycline, quinidine, drugs used for inhibiting tumor necrosis factor such as etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab, rituxan, or rituximab for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and lymphoma, etc. some of the complications of untreated SLE conditions may get progressively worse and may lead to lupus nephritis (kidney damage), stroke, heart attack, etc.
