Why Anti GAD-65 Antibody test?
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
Anti-GAD-65 antibody testis intended for the determination of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibodies in the serum for the diagnosis of auto-immune mediated type-1 diabetes mellitus. Actually, GAD-65 antibodies are biomarkers for auto-immune central nervous system disorders, non-neurological auto-immune diseases like type-1 diabetes mellitus, autoimmune thyroid disease, and also in conditions like pernicious anemia, etc. High levels of these antibodies are detected in a variety of autoimmune neurologic disorders including stiff-person syndrome (Moersch-Woltman syndrome), auto-immune cerebellitis, brain stem encephalitis, seizure disorders, and other myelopathies. Other associated manifestations include thyrotoxicosis, Grave’s disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, premature ovarian failure, Addision’s disease (idiopathic adrenocortical failure), vitiligo, and thyro-gastric antibody-mediated disorders. Clinical manifestations of GAD-65 antibody disorders include motor symptoms such as muscle rigidity, spasms, limb ataxia, balance disorders, myoclonus, etc, and cognitive deficits include memory loss, irritability, and hallucination, etc. Signs and symptoms are excessive hunger and thirst, frequent urination, irritability, blurry vision, fatigue, weakness, weight loss and prolonged healing delays on cut wounds, etc. complications of untreated GAD-65 antibody disorders include vision damage, irreversible damage to the nervous system, cardiovascular disease, and kidney damage, etc.
