Why Anti-Nuclear Antibody test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION:

Anti-Nuclear Antibody test is used as a primary test to help evaluate a person for auto-immune disorders that affect many tissues and organs (misdirected attack on one’s own tissue) throughout the body (systemic) and is most often used to help diagnose systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE). Anti-nuclear antibodies often attack the body’s own tissues and especially targeting each cell’s nucleus. However, conditions such as infections, cancers, and other similar medical problems such as autoimmune hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjȍgren syndrome, scleroderma, autoimmune thyroid disease, and dermatomyositisetc, can also result in a positive ANA test.  Clinical manifestations with signs and symptoms include organ inflammation, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, skin rash (malar rash), stiffness, persistent fever, pain in the feet and hands, etc.
