ALLERGEN – POTATO:

Why the Allergen potato test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION:

Allergen potato test is a part of the food allergy panel. This IgE allergy test uses a blood sample to determine if the suspected patient is allergic to raw or cooked potatoes. In the majority of the cases, it is also noted that those who are allergic to potatoes are more likely to be allergic to other plants or plant products (for cross-reactivity with members of the nightshade family) such as eggplant or brinjal, tomatoes, etc. This potato allergen test checks for an allergic reaction to certain proteins in potatoes such as patatin (glycoprotein) or solanine (alkaloid) and determine the levels of IgE antibodies and/or histamines present in the blood against those allergens in suspected patients. Hence, a skin prick test also called a puncture or scratch test is performed in the forearm for allergic response elicited by the body. People with allergies to potatoes may also suffer from similar symptoms on the consumption of potato-related products such as chips, vodka, casseroles, croquettes, pasta, soups, stews, and puree, etc. Some of the symptoms of allergy due to potatoes when ingested drowsiness, weakness, and gastrointestinal problems. People with true potato allergies may react immediately after touching or peeling or eating potatoes. These symptoms of potato allergy include tingling sensation on the lips, rhinitis, stinging eyes, stuffy or running nose, sneezing, itchy skin, a sore or scratchy throat (at the port of entry), and a few gastrointestinal symptoms of potato allergy or intolerance include nausea or vomiting, bloating and cramps, diarrhea, etc. Other similar symptoms include itchy, swollen, or watery eyes, runny, itchy nose, sneezing, difficulty breathing, scratchy, sore throat, cough and wheezing, irritated itchy red skin and/or eczema-like rash in the skin, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and clinical manifestation of signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, etc. untreated complications of a potato allergy can lead to consequences like rapid heartbeat, sudden drop in blood pressure, heart palpitations, trouble breathing, swelling in the air passage of the throat, slurred speech, swollen tongue, swollen lips, cyanosis around lips, fingertips or toes and loss of consciousness, etc.
