ALLERGEN – MILK:

Why Allergen milk test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION:

Allergen Milk Test is a part of the food allergy panel. 2 to 3% of children younger than three years old are allergic to milk. This test is also performed along with the lactose intolerance test.  This milk allergen test checks for an allergic reaction to milk by determining the levels of IgE antibodies present in the blood against milk protein or its related antigens. This test is performed by a skin prick and small amounts of milk protein (casein and/or whey protein and/or lactalbumin) are injected. At the test location on the skin, an allergic hive or bump is noticed for any allergic rashes in the suspected patient. Some of the symptoms of milk allergy include hives, stomach upset, bloody stools – especially in children, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and clinical manifestation of signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis – a rare potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing (swelling of airways – impairing the ability to breathe), sudden drop in blood pressure causing dizziness and fainting consequently leading to shock. Untreated complications of a milk allergy can lead to consequences like rapid heartbeat, sudden drop in blood pressure, heart palpitations, trouble breathing, swelling in the air passage of the throat, slurred speech, swollen tongue, swollen lips, cyanosis around lips, fingertips, or toes and loss of consciousness, etc.
