Aldolase

Aldolase is an enzyme that produces energy from glucose by glycolysis. It is found predominantly in the Muscles and the Liver. This test measures Aldolase enzyme level to diagnose the problems associated with Muscles, Liver, and conditions like Heart Attack, Dermatomyositis, and Hepatitis.

ALDOLASE:

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

Aldolase levels in the blood rise in a patient during muscle wastage and hence this test is ordered to diagnose and monitor conditions such as skeletal muscle disorders (inherited diseases e.g. muscular dystrophy, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, rhabdomyolysis, vigorous exercise, recent surgery, prolonged seizure, drugs such as steroids, anesthetics, alcohol, cocaine, amphotericin -B and also in malignant hyperthermia caused due to muscle contraction) or diseases (infectious diseases). Aldolase is a glycolytic enzyme that is present predominantly in the liver and skeletal muscles. This enzyme level is found elevated in conditions such as heart attack or cardiac catheterization and liver cirrhosis. In recent times, the aldolase test has been replaced by a more specific creatine kinase (CK or CPK) enzyme test for muscle wastage (i.e. CK is an iso-enzyme marker present in brain and lungs CPK-1, heart muscles CPK-2, and skeletal muscle CPK-3) or also troponin levels and ALT and AST for liver disorders.

High or abnormal aldolase levels are seen in conditions such as muscle damage, dermatomyositis, viral hepatitis, muscular dystrophy, heart attack, polymyositis, leukemia, and gangrene, cancers of the liver, pancreas, and prostate. Symptoms include muscle weakness and darkening of urine color.

Low aldolase levels are seen in conditions such as fructose intolerance, muscle-wastage disease, and late-stage in muscular dystrophy.
