AFB – Acid- Fast- Bacillus is a kind of Bacteria that is the reason for Tuberculosis (TB) and other infections. TB causes Health issues to the lungs, Brain, Spine, and Kidneys. As per the Doctor’s recommendations, samples taken from various places such as Blood, Urine, Phlegm for this test for diagnosing Tuberculosis and infections like Leprosy. AFB test in urine helps to diagnose Tuberculosis and other microbial infections.

Why AFB urine test?
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
AFB urine cultures are used to diagnose active mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. TB is a serious bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs and can be spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Moreover from the primary site of infection which is the lungs, reactivation can spread to other parts of the body such as the brain, spine, and kidneys. AFB cultures can also be used to monitor for prognosis, to follow effective treatment. This test is also done for the incidence of urinary tuberculosis among kidney patients suspected of TB. The symptoms of active TB include a cough that lasts more than three weeks or more, coughing up of blood and/or sputum, chest pain, fever, fatigue, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. When active TB disseminates to other parts of the body besides the lungs then symptoms vary depending on the site of the body part effects such as back pain, pain in the flanks, blood in urine, joint pain, weakness, etc.
The other tests include Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) smear examination, inoculation and culture on Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) culture medium, radiometric BACTEC-460 system, PCR, DNA enzyme Immuno Assay (DEIA) test.
