ADRENALINE (Plasma):
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
Adrenaline in plasma is screened to diagnose adrenal insufficiency, a disorder that causes adrenal glands to secrete very low levels of hormones or too high levels in case of tumors of the adrenals. The diseases of the adrenals include Cushing’s syndrome, Addison's disease, tumors such as pheochromocytoma, etc.
Causes of adrenal insufficiency are auto-immune disease, tumor, etc. The signs and symptoms of the adrenal gland include upper body obesity, round face, and neck, thinning of arms and legs, high blood pressure, muscle and bone weakness, moodiness, irritability or depression, high blood sugars, and slow growth rates in children.
Diagnosis is usually done by measuring androgen hormone levels, aldosterone levels, ACTH tests to measure levels of ACTH and cortisol in the blood which helps to detect the possible causes of the disease either due to pituitary origin or due to adrenal malfunction. Other tests for adrenals include blood and urine tests to measure adrenal hormones, ACTH stimulation test, insulin tolerance test, CRH stimulation test, antibody tests, test for TB, CT scan, and/or MRI scan.
