Acetone (Urine-Qualitative)

Acetone is a ketone produced by the metabolism process of fat. Acetone Urine Test determines the amount of acetone present in the urine to examine the disorders as in the condition of ketoacidosis & ketonuria and also helps in prognosis during monitoring its treatment process.

ACETONE URINE TEST:

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

When the cells do not get enough glucose, the body burns fat instead, which is reflected in blood and urine. Ketones or ketone bodies are by-products of fat metabolism. When glucose (primary metabolic fuel for the source of energy for the body) is not sufficiently available to the body’s cells or when insulin is insufficiently produced or in insulin resistance, glucose as the primary source of energy cannot be utilized by the body and since the brain needs continuous energy fuel (the brain is covered with blood-brain barrier where only glucose and ketones are permeable as an energy source for the brain to function), the alternative source of fuel are ketone bodies (secondary metabolic fuel for the source of energy for the body) are produced and hence present in urine as ketonuria.  Serum acetone test is primarily screened for Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA- a complication of diabetes that can lead to coma or death) or starvation as well. In pregnant women with diabetes, a urine ketone test (for ketonuria) is mandatory and is a part of the routine tests to check the ketone bodies in the body. Causes for acetonuria are drinking excess alcohol, excessive vomiting, pregnancy, starvation, illness or infection, heart attack (MI-myocardial infarction), emotional or physical trauma, medications such as corticosteroids, and diuretics. The symptoms of ketone in urine include increased thirst, increased urination (ketonuria), nausea, dehydration, heavy breathing, dilated pupils, mental confusions and breath may also smell of fruit. When the ketone body's level is increased excessively, it makes blood pH become more acidic, leading to diabetic ketoacidosis and increased ketones in the blood cause kidney stone formation. Signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis are excessive thirsts, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, weakness or fatigue, shortness of breath, fruity-scented breath, and confusion.
