ABSOLUTE MONOCYTE COUNT: (AMC)
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
Monocytes are circulating macrophages that have a key role in the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory process (i.e. asthma and allergic reactions) during an immune response. Higher levels of monocytes in the blood are called monocytosis. It could be due to viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis, mumps, measles, parasitic infections, chronic inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, TB, sub-acute bacterial endocarditis, brucellosis, etc. symptoms for monocytosis are splenomegaly. Low levels of monocytes can be due to treatment for cancers such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, infections or disorders of the bone marrow, etc. symptoms for monocytopenia are fatigue and fever. Other associated tests include flow cytometry, antibody blood test, bone marrow aspirate, bone marrow biopsy, cytogenic and molecular testing, etc.
