Lymphocytes are one of the five types of white blood cell subtypes. White blood cells build a strong Immune system of the body to fight against infectious diseases. While microbes cause infections and allergies increase lymphocyte levels. ALC test is performed as a differential diagnosis to determine the lymphocyte count of the blood for diagnosing infections as a tool of screening.

ABSOLUTE LYMPHOCYTE COUNT: (ALC)

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

Lymphocytes are WBCs that produce specifically two subtypes of lymphocytes called T-cells and B-cells (they combat foreign invading pathogens and cancer cells by cell-mediated and humoral immunity antibodies. Lymphocytes are vital components of WBCs. The role of lymphocytes is to combat infections. High lymphocyte count indicates infection, inflammation, leukemia, etc.

High lymphocytes in the blood are called lymphocytosis. It could be due to infections (bacterial, viral, and others), cancer of the blood or lymphatic system, autoimmune diseases, and inflammation.  Symptoms of high lymphocytosis are swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, splenomegaly, fatigue, fever and infections, loss of weight and appetite, etc. Low lymphocytes in the blood are called lymphopenia or lymphocytopenia. It can be due to cold or other infections, intense physical exercise, severe stress, or malnutrition. When the lymphocytes are low, the body becomes prone to infections to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other parasites, etc. symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, enlarged lymph nodes, painful joints, skin rashes, and night sweats, etc. Other associated tests include flow cytometry, antibody blood test, bone marrow aspirate, bone marrow biopsy, cytogenic and molecular testing, etc.
