17-HYDROXY CORTICOSTEROIDS - This is also known as 17-Hydroxy Corticosteroids and 17 OHCS. 17OHCS is synthesized by the breakdown of the Cortisol steroid hormone. This test evaluates the 17OHCS amount in the urine. This is for detecting the level of Cortisol Hormone to diagnose Cushing syndrome.
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
Lower 17-OHCS may indicate adrenal glands not producing enough of their hormones due to infection and/or disease or organ disorder / dysfunction-related disturbances (such as pituitary gland insufficiency). Higher 17-OHCS may indicate Cushing’s syndrome, severe physical or emotional stress, or hormone replacement therapy. This test is usually done as indicated by the physician from the signs and symptoms of these hormone-related disorders. This test is suggested in patients with symptoms of depression, malnutrition, obesity, pregnancy and severe high blood pressure, etc. Other associated tests include Radio immune assay, ELISA, spectrometry, etc.
