URINE KETONE:
Ketones produced when fat breaks down as a source of alternative energy during depletion of glucose reserve as glycogen. Urine Ketone test determines the ketone level of the blood or urine. Elevated ketone level in the urine is known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) condition. People who are affected by Type-1 or Type-2Diabetes will be regularly monitored by this test (prognosis).
CLINICAL INFORMATION :
This test is usually done for altered metabolism that reflects in abnormally high levels of ketone bodies in the body that are excreted in the urine. High ketones are produced in pathological cases like in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (diabetic ketoacidosis) or in COPD - lung diseases (respiratory keto-acidosis – altered chemical balance in the blood) and when the body is on a keto-diet regimen (least carbohydrate diet) for a weight loss program in the fitness centers, hence when ketosis is achieved, ketones are excreted in the urine. This test is suggested in patients with symptoms of dehydration, keto-acidosis which can lead to coma or even death, hence urine ketones are measured for identifying the cause and also during the prognosis. Other associated tests include Rothera’s test, urine strip dip method, colorimetric, spectrometry, etc.

SampleRequirement: Specimen - Blood sample taken from the vein (or) Urine Sample (24 Hours). Test preparation: Fasting required.
