Hemoglobin (Hgb) Blood test evaluates hemoglobin count of the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein (Iron Contained) in the RED BLOOD CELLS (RBC). This common blood test measures the hemoglobin levels to diagnose anemia (Lower Hb level) and polycythemia (High Hb level).

This test is usually done when the patient is experiencing weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, or dizziness. The signs and symptoms may point to either anemia or polycythemia vera. Hence hemoglobin tests can help to diagnose these medical conditions or monitor the progress of effective treatment as a prognosis. This test is suggested in patients with decreased RBCs, (due to altered bone marrow function due to disease or disorder, reduced production of hemoglobin production in case of iron or B12deficiency), and/or any blood loss such as trauma, etc. Other associated tests include Sahli’s method, electrophoresis, etc.
