TOTAL BILIRUBIN:

Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment present in the liver formed by the breakdown of RBC. This plays a vital role in the breaking down of the fat in the metabolism activity. The total bilirubin test evaluates the bilirubin level of the body to diagnose conditions like infections eg malaria and abnormalities of liver-associated diseases.

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

This test checks the health of your liver (i.e. in case of liver problems such as hepatitis, or blockages such as gall stones). The causes can be divided into pre-hepatic (hemolytic anemia) or certain drugs, hepatic (alcoholic fatty liver and hepatitis), and post-hepatic issues (bile duct obstruction, gall stones, and pancreatitis) also type of bilirubin can be conjugated form or unconjugated form of bilirubin. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage or diseases associated with it. High levels of indirect bilirubin in the blood indicate the liver is incapable to efficiently clear bilirubin effectively hence may indicate hidden pathologies (such as stones, block in bile ducts, infections, tumors, diseases, etc.) behind the cause which needs further investigations.

This test is usually done for JAUNDICE (yellow coloration of eyes and skin) in newborn and liver-related diseases, infectious diseases like malaria (excess RBC break down), hepatitis and liver diseases in alcoholics, etc., and other related pathologies. This test is suggested in patients with symptoms such as swelling causing enlarged abdomen, chills, fever, chest pain, weakness, lightheadedness, fatigue, and nausea, etc. Other associated tests include the Vandenberg test for direct or conjugated bilirubin, indirect or unconjugated bilirubin by kit method, colorimetric method, and spectrometric methods, etc.
